The volcanic geography of the west coast creates a narrow continental shelf that drops to 2,000 meters within three nautical miles of shore. The Mauritius Marine Parks Act of 2020 restricts swimming with dolphins to designated zones and limits vessel approaches to 100 meters, regulations enforced by the National Coast Guard Marine Unit. Catamaran excursions accommodate 25 to 40 passengers and include snorkeling stops at Crystal Rock, a basalt outcrop two kilometers offshore where sergeant majors, parrotfish, and octopus inhabit coral gardens at five-meter depths. Speedboat tours carry eight to twelve passengers and prioritize dolphin proximity over onboard amenities, reaching sighting zones within 20 minutes of departure.
